ALL TUNING DONE ON-SITE
24 hour turnaround, maximum, on most work
Our workshop facility allows us to offer a comprehensive tuning service for both skis and snowboards, including fitting and/or re-fitting bindings. Snowboards need to be tuned differently to skis. The majority of new snowboards will have some concave sections and perform poorly. Flattening snowboards is done one edge at a time. A snowboard is too wide to flatten its width all at once, and there is no reason to do so anyway. Since snowboards are constantly used up on edge, the edges and the base plastic next to the edge wears away much faster than the base plastic at the center of the base. Consequently, the board's base quickly becomes convex (rounder). When it does, edge sets become more difficult because the board needs to be tipped progressively higher in order to reach the edge. We prefer to use hand held Ruby stone blades made of aluminium oxide (not silicone carbide)to cut the base. They have a cutting action more like polishing than cutting.
BASE GRINDING
A lot of equipment can be either base high or edge high and this greatly inhibits the performance. A flat base and polished edges will have you riding better than ever.
EDGE SHARPENING/BEVELLING
All edges are polished with a diamond stone to remove any heat hardened areas prior to sharpening and/or bevelling. After sharpening, the edges go through a series of polishing processes
HOT WAXING
One of the important aspects of sintered polyethylene bases is that they are porous and the porosity naturally allows the base to absorb more wax, which reduces surface tension and thereby increases glide. Because the Ruby stones mentioned above cut the polyethelyne so cleanly, the pores are left open. Stone grinding, on the other hand, causes the polyethylene to move laterally (smear or creep) on the base due to the speed and pressure of the stone resulting in the pores getting partially covered up with plastic "creep"
We hand hot wax every ski and snowboard. This method actually impregnates the bases and helps reduce drying out. Roll-on waxing doesn't result in the same finish or have the durability of hand waxing.
We carry different hot waxes for different temperature requirements, so if you are heading overseas, we can have your gear ready to perform in the colder climate
